How To Brew
french press:
Coarsely grind ½ cup coffee beans— about 10 seconds in grinder.
Place grounds in the press pot.
Heat water to boiling. Let cool 30 seconds.
Then pour over grounds, filling the pot.
Wait 1 minute.
Stir well, top off with water.
Press plunger until barely submerged.
Wait 2 ½ – 3 more minutes.
Carefully press plunger down all the way.
Pour coffee immediately into cups to enjoy now, or into a thermos or carafe to enjoy later.
This makes a pretty strong cup of coffee. Adjust amount of beans used to taste.
iced coffee:
There are several ways to make cold coffee. Of late, the cold brewing method has gained popularity, but we haven’t jumped on that bandwagon. We prefer to simple brew extra-strong coffee and dump it over ice. Incredibly flavorful and instantly gratifying.
So, choose your favorite method of brewing. Use 1 ½ times as much ground coffee. Prepare a container with ice (lots!), and dump that hot coffee over it as soon as it is done. Add milk and sweetener to taste. Iced coffee stores well in the fridge for a day or two.
N.B.: Not all coffees ice well. Mild coffees tend to taste too bright as iced coffee. We recommend coffee that is balanced and has some roast and/or chocolate flavors that will stand up well to ice.
cone:
A great way to enjoy a single, perfect cup of coffee. Grind finely. Measure out grounds. Pour water just off a boil over grounds.
drip:
Keys to delicious drip coffee:
1) Brewing temperature—many brewers do not heat water up to 203 degrees, which is key to properly extracting all the flavors from the grounds.
2) Don’t skimp on the grounds. Don’t overdo it either. 1 ½ tbls per cup. Adjust to taste, of course.
3) Once brewed, delicious coffee should not just camp out on the coffee warmer for the rest of the day. Transfer to a thermos or carafe to enjoy later.
